Featured Style Blogger: La Bella Tanchi

Tanya from La Bella Tanchi

How long have you been blogging?
Since January 2013

What were your main reasons for starting a blog?
I started my blog because I wanted representation for tanchis (tan chiquitias – petite and curvy), Spanglish humor for our common challenges, and to share my journey (both uplifting and ugly) of accepting my genes and creating a positive body image with style! I’m all about TED talks and when I heard fashion blogger, Andy Torres, in her TED video, I completely resonated with the need to translate fashion to real people, which obviously includes tanchis – and start a blog.

What inspires you?
Everything. I’m kind of cheating with that answer, but in realty I’m like a walking sponge and I’ll find inspiration everywhere for all aspects of my life. Sunsets and wilderness do wonders for me. My go-to’s for wisdom and inspiration are my Mama Sonia, Sonia Sotomayor, Lili Gil, Allison Andrews, Dolores Huerta, Ramit Sethi, and my all-time favorite Kelly Coutrone. TED talks are amazing, and the works of art by contemporary artists such as SebastiĆ£o Salgado and Andrea Zittel have never failed to inspire. I also love my Anthropologie catalogues and Mafalda comics.

What do you like to do on your spare time?
Explore--especially San Diego because there is no place like it in the world. My go-to Halloween costume is Dora the Explorer – but it’s not too far off from my mode of operating. I spend a lot of time nerding out on every topic you can think of (love libraries) and I’ve been making art my whole life (I have a serious crayon problem). I love soaking up sun at the beach, hiking, YOGA, spending time in my man-cave aka closet, and giving back to my communities.

How long have you lived in San Diego?  Tell us what you love about SD.
I have lived in San Diego for 2 years. Initially I came for a summer, but like other transplants, I fell in love and stayed. I love every niche and corner of San Diego – North Park’s amazing eateries, OB’s pier, Balboa Park, Downtown San Diego’s nightlife, PB’s street of boutique shopping, North County’s wineries, and hiking trails everywhere! There is so much to do and never enough time. My favorite thing to do is go to Law Street – it is my favorite place in the world – I love watching the stellar sunsets, feeling the wind on my face from the ocean when on a run, and surfing the waves!

What advice would you give to others who would like to begin blogging?

Just do it.  I postponed starting my blog for far too long and with the powers combined of fellow fashion blogger friend, Bianca of the In Between Girls and reading, The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield, I finally did it. The best advice I ever got is that you have to start somewhere. My blog is ever evolving and today my content has improved in quality and direction – of which I have much #TanchiPride for.  Never stop tweeking!
