How
long have you been blogging?
In
August it will be one year! I can’t believe it.
What
were your main reasons you started a blog?
It
sounds like a bummer, but I actually started it while my mother and my sister
were both dying. They were long illnesses that were draining on every
level, and I am single mom working 40 hours a week with a 12-year-old and a
7-year-old. I was going nuts. I found that talking about
frivolous stuff like shoes and sockbuns really animated me and offered this
weird respite. So it started out of sadness, but really my blog takes
tremendous inspiration from my mom and sister that is nothing but
positive. Now that they are gone, I think about them all the time
when I’m writing posts. I just love writing. But I only want to write exactly what I'm thinking
at any given moment, so I am a terrible journalist. I've written a few
articles for the Reader, and PopMatters and Aversion online, but I just don't
like... structure...having to use correct grammar, in English, all the
time... punctuation... editing...pitching ideas...ugh! So blogging is
perfect for me.
What
inspires you?
Movies,
music, TV, pop culture, literature, my kids—it all stimulates a memory or an
idea and I want to write about it. I can go online and start with a
random search for a particular image, and before I know it, I’ve discovered a
new band, remembered an old movie I love, found the title of a book I want to
read, and every one of them can generate a look and a blog post.
What
do you like to do in your spare time?
Hang
out with my kids and my boyfriend. Seeing movies, reading, going to
the beach--and I have a weekly poker game with friends that I look forward to
all week.
How
long have you lived in San Diego? Tell us what you love about SD.
We
moved here from Chicago when I was a toddler. I attended college in
Berkeley, so that’s the only time I’ve lived elsewhere—and I was the only
person I knew who moved back home after graduation! Everyone else
stayed in the Bay Area or went somewhere more exciting—but I love San Diego so
much and my family is here, so there was no question for me. I
actually live in Chula Vista and grew up there and National City. What
do I love about SD? The Casbah. Lolita’s Taco
Shop. South Park. Going to the movies at Mission
Valley. Being a border town, and being able to speak Spanish
almost anywhere you go. Sitting on the "grassy knoll" at
Seaport Village right at the edge of the water on Kettner.
